Mt Kaʻala — The Highest Mountain on Oʻahu: 8-Hour Adventure in Hawaiʻi

Mt Kaʻala is the highest mountain on the island, and thatʻs challenging hike ー steep up/down hill, rock & rope climbing, and muddy terrain, which are my favorite features!

It might be pretty tough for especially beginner hikers, but don’t think like you cannot do it. I’m from Tokyo, never done this such a long hike before and never thought I’d hike the tallest mountain on this island when I was in Japan, but I did it. I actually did it a couple of times. Just be prepared and believe in yourself:)

Here is everything you need to know to survive and enjoy the hike.

Mythology & History

In Hawaiian legend, thereʻs the goddess Kainoa lives on the highest peak of Waiʻanae range ー Mt Kaʻala. She was really kind and would send the native birds of the forest and shore so lost travelers can get home safe.

Where is Mt Kaʻala Located?

  • Trailhead location: Located on the Waiʻanae Range on the westside of Oʻahu, the trail starts at the end of Waianae Valley Road.

There is no bathroom nearby so make sure you use bathroom before heading down!

How Long Does it Take to Hike Mt Kaʻala?

  • Beginners: 9-10 hours

  • Moderate hikers: 7-8 hours

  • Advanced: 5-6 hours

You can check AllTrails to see how long people usually take for hiking this trail.

What You’ll See at the Top of Mt Kaʻala? (if it’s clear, which is very rare)

  • Waiʻanae and Koʻolau mountain ranges

  • The North Shore

  • Pacific Ocean

  • FAA station (you can see even if itʻs not clear)

Honestly, the clear sky and clear views are rare at the summit. It’s most likely foggy and cloudy, still beautiful tho.

Tips for Hiking Mt Kaʻala

  • Start early (otherwise, you might have to hike in the dark on the way back, depending on how long it’ll take to hike for you)

  • Bring plenty of water (hydration is the most important for long hike)

  • Wear shoes with strong grip (especially close to the top, it’s usually muddy and slippery)

  • Bring extra layer – rain jacket or a thin hoodie (it’s a little bit chilly  at the summit)

  • Do not leave trash on the trails (Mālama ʻĀina, Aloha ʻĀina)

  • Avoid hiking after rain (it’ll be really slippery)

We recommend checking the weather and recent reviews by others on AllTrails before going on hike so you can prepare! I always check the trail conditions (especially for long hiking trails) before heading down to make sure itʻs safe to hike:)

My Personal Experience Hiking Mt Kaʻala

I’ve done this hike twice and yes, this is one of the most challenging hike on this island. If you’re scared of height, probably you won’t like it… but if you’re NOT, then why don’t you try? Many people consider this hike as hard and long, but it’s not that bad if you prepare well. It took me 8.5 hours round trip when I hiked first time. Second time tho, it was just 5.5 hours total. It’s just like other sports. You just need to train yourself and that’s what I did!

The first half of the hike felt like it’s just warm up. The trail was dry, the air was pretty warm and the weather was nice. I was so stoked and expected to see the best views, like 360-degrees views with clear sky. However, the last half showed me another face ー huge rock and rope climbing sections, muddy and slippery terrain, foggy and cold air… I actually enjoyed these features, but one thing, never gonna lie, the rope was pretty thin so seemed a little sketchy and unreliable.

At the summit, I couldn’t see the views I expected. Still, it was beautiful. Being surrounded by clouds felt like a magical moment, and hiking is fun because it’s unpredictable.

Hiking Mt Kaʻala is a wild and rewarding challenge! As the highest point on Oʻahu, it’s a unpredictable journey. You might start in the sun and end up in a chilly, foggy cloud at the summit, so definitely pack a hoodie! Between the huge rock scrambles and the tricky rope sections, it’s a tough climb, but the sense of accomplishment you feel at the top is absolutely worth it.

If you are looking for a hike that you can challenge yourself, this is definitely the one!

Also, AllTrails is the tool we always use to check the trail features, routes, conditions, and reviews to be ready for hikes! Offline maps on AllTrails are very helpful especially for hiking like this, so I highly recommend it!
